MILDURA WRITERS’ FESTIVAL:  19-22 JULY 2012

One of Australia’s most enjoyable writers’ festivals just got much easier for interstate visitors thanks to new direct flights from Melbourne,Sydney and Adelaide to Mildura operated by Rex Airlines, Virgin and Qantas. Wine, writing and beautiful food, prepared by Jim McDougall formerly of Vue de Monde, make Mildura “one of the most intimate and enjoyable Writers’ Festivals in Australia” – Clive James.

Mildura Writers’ Festival, has another stunning line-up this year including an Australian exclusive – American writer and musician Liz Moore.  Writer’s include: Anna Goldsworthy, Robert Gray, Barry Hill, Evelyn Juers, Paul Kane, Drusilla Modjeska, Liz Moore, Les Murray, Peter Robb, Peter Vale, Chris Wallace-Crabbe and John Wolseley, with a poetry performance set to music by Joe Dolce.

 

Highlights/Critical acclaim

Barry HillNaked Clay: Drawing from Lucian Freud, has been hailed as “illuminating, expansive and profound.”

Evelyn Juers, (winner, 2009 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for non-fictiion) The Recluse, 2012, focuses on the model for Charles Dickens’ bizarre character Miss Havisham in Great Expectations.  “enthralling” – The Guardian (UK)

Les Murray, often considered the unofficial poet laureate of Australia, discusses his latest anthology, The Quadrant Book of Poetry.

Drusilla Modjeska, will discuss her recent novel The Mountain, set in Papua New Guinea: “an ambitious epic,” ABR.

Liz Moore’s recent novel, Heft “beautiful…stunningly sad and heroically hopeful” – O, The Oprah Magazine.

Peter RobbLives, a series of remarkable portraits of contemporary figures and past luminaries, from Julian Assange to Caravaggio, from Peter Carey to Pasolini.…“one of Australia’s finest writers,” – The Global Mail

Joe Dolce, singer/songwriter and poet, will perform poems to music in honour of the Festival Patron, Les Murray, at the festival dinner. The dinner, a festival highlight, is prepared by Jim McDougall.
